A somewhat funny home improvement story
A somewhat funny story that I’m sure everyone can relate to. My wife has wanted to repaint parts of our house, and I’ve been resisting. We’ve repainted the bedrooms and bathrooms each twice in 7 years, which is too much for me. Anything less than 5 years is excessive and I lean more towards every 10+. The only rooms we have not repainted since we initially moved in are the kitchen and the dining/living area.
Our kitchen had one of those old Nutone exhaust fans in the wall that previous owners had just plywooded over. Coming winter, we can feel it drafting so I decided to pull it out and patch the hole. No problem, did it over a weekend. But now there is a big white spot on a light blue wall. I realize after I finished patching that not only do we not have any more of that paint, but there is no way we’re going to be able to match it after 7 years in the kitchen. I guess we are painting the kitchen.
We go and pick out the paint color last week and paint the kitchen this past weekend. Fairly small kitchen so not a big deal, took a day to do 2 coats. Except, painting the ceiling Friday night, I bumped the light fixture and it stopped working. Great. So I had to take that apart and essentially rehang the fixture.
So Saturday we paint everything, Saturday evening we start cleaning up and putting the kitchen back together. I should tell you that we have 2 kids, 5yo and 2.5yo, so me and my wife pretty much alternated working on the kitchen and watching the kids. At this time, they are playing awesome together, so I decided to help my wife take some of the taping off. We get the tape off and are admiring our work, looks really good. My wife realizes that kids have been pretty quiet while we’ve both been in the kitchen. Look out and see my older son playing with his blocks, great. The younger one is in the dining room doing something behind the table. Turns out, he found a green pen somewhere and decided to paint like Mommy and Daddy are doing, only on the dining room wall. ALL OVER. Scrubbed it, magic eraser, nothing is taking this off. So I guess we’ll be painting the dining room too now. Problem is, the dining room and living room share a wall. So either we have to accent wall it, or I’m painting the living room as well. Also, the living room shares a wall up the stairs and the length of the upstairs hallway, So, again, accent wall or I’m painting the dining room, living room and hallway. I feel like Hal from Malcom in the Middle fixing a light bulb.
