The project seemed simple: fix up the guest room so it didn’t feel like a storage closet with a bed in it. We planned on new paint, a better light, maybe a bookshelf. Nothing dramatic.
But as we started clearing things out, we realized how much of our home was filled with “someday” items stuff we meant to deal with later and never did. Sorting through it felt like sorting through old decisions.
We chose a soft wall color, added a modest rug, and hung a few photos that actually meant something to us. Instead of cramming the closet full again, we donated half of what had been sitting there untouched.
When the room was finished, it wasn’t fancy. It was simple, calm, and welcoming. Friends who stayed over loved it, but the bigger surprise was how it affected the rest of the house. We became more intentional everywhere less clutter, more purpose.
That one renovation taught us something unexpected: creating a better space can quietly change your habits too.
Sometimes the room isn’t the only thing that gets renewed.
