only really acceptable if you can’t vent outside at all—like in some condos—and you pair them with a strong blower and high-quality multi-stage filters. start with a good baffle or mesh grease filter, then an activated carbon stage deep enough to actually adsorb odors. change or recharge filters often, since high-output cooking loads them fast. even then, they won’t match exterior venting for moisture and fine-particle removal.

Recirculating hoods can be acceptable over high‑output cooktops if ducting isn’t feasible, but they must use high‑efficiency filters such as multi‑stage charcoal and grease filters rated for heavy cooking. Performance is still lower than vented hoods, so frequent filter maintenance is critical.
