Deck over concrete slab: sleepers, vapor concerns, and fastener choices

Transforming a concrete patio slab into a low deck can be an exciting project. I’m considering whether to float the sleepers on rubber shims, securely anchor them to the slab, and incorporate a vapor barrier. What are the best fasteners or anchors for outdoor use that will ensure durability? Any tips or insights on this would be greatly appreciated!

Use stainless or coated concrete anchors, float sleepers on rubber shims for drainage, and add a vapor barrier to keep it dry.

For outdoor use, it’s essential to choose fasteners and anchors that can withstand various weather conditions, an example is wedge Anchors and concrete screws

For fastening sleepers to a concrete slab outdoors, stainless steel concrete screws or galvanized wedge anchors work best

Because they resist corrosion and hold up under moisture. Use a polymer-coated or stainless screw for attaching decking to sleepers, and if you’re floating the sleepers, rubber or plastic shims with a vapor-permeable membrane underneath help drainage and reduce rot.

Yep, you can totally put a low deck on a concrete slab, but how you lay the supports really affects how long it lasts and how sturdy it is.

For a low deck over concrete, use pressure-treated sleepers with stainless or hot-dip-galvanized anchors. Rubber shims help drainage, and a vapor barrier protects wood avoid trapping moisture against the slab.

For a deck over concrete, float most sleepers on rubber shims for drainage, but anchor key ones at edges with stainless steel or galvanized concrete screws/wedge anchors.

Place a vapor barrier under sleepers to protect wood from moisture. Leave small gaps between deck boards for airflow, and slightly slope the deck away from structures.

This balances stability, durability, and moisture protection.

For a low deck over concrete:

Fasteners:

Concrete screws (Tapcon) – easy, reliable.

Wedge anchors – strong, permanent.

Lag screws + shields – for heavy timber.

Post base brackets (Simpson Strong-Tie) – elevate wood, prevent moisture.

Tips:

Use a vapor barrier over the slab.

Ensure drainage and airflow.

Level with shims or adjustable supports.

Choose pressure-treated or composite decking for durability.

For a low deck on concrete, floating sleepers on outdoor-rated rubber shims works for light loads, but anchoring is more stable. Use stainless steel wedge anchors, sleeve anchors, or Tapcon screws with a vapor barrier under rot-resistant lumber. Space fasteners ~16–24″ and slope slightly for drainage.
