Floating shelves are one of the easiest and most rewarding home projects. They save space, look modern, and add character to your room. The best part? You don’t need expensive tools or carpentry skills to make one.
Materials You’ll Need
-
2 wooden boards (cut to your desired shelf length, e.g., 24” x 8”)
-
Sandpaper (medium & fine grit)
-
Wood screws (2.5” – 3”)
-
Drill & drill bits
-
Wall anchors (if installing on drywall)
-
Wood glue
-
Level
-
Stain or paint (depending on your style)
-
Polyurethane finish (for protection)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Measure & Cut the Wood
Decide how long and deep you want your shelf to be. Most floating shelves are 24–36 inches long and about 8–10 inches deep. Cut your board to size (many hardware stores will cut it for free if you don’t have a saw).
Step 2: Sand the Edges
Use medium-grit sandpaper first, then fine-grit for smooth edges. Make sure the corners aren’t sharp so they won’t snag on hands or clothes.
Step 3: Stain or Paint the Wood
Apply your chosen wood stain for a rustic look, or paint it for a modern aesthetic. Let it dry completely. Then, seal with a clear polyurethane coat to protect against scratches and moisture.
Step 4: Create the Hidden Bracket
Floating shelves work by attaching a hidden bracket inside the wood. You can either:
-
Buy a floating shelf bracket online, OR
-
Make your own using a 2x2 wooden strip that fits inside the hollow shelf.
If making your own, screw the strip into the wall studs so it can hold weight securely.
Step 5: Mount the Shelf
-
Use a stud finder to locate studs in the wall.
-
Drill pilot holes and screw in your hidden bracket or metal support.
-
Slide your shelf onto the bracket and secure it with wood screws from underneath.
-
Use a level to ensure it’s perfectly straight.
Step 6: Style Your Shelf
Decorate with plants, books, picture frames, candles, or collectibles. Floating shelves look especially good when arranged in pairs or sets of three.
Tips for Success
-
If you’re mounting on drywall without studs, always use wall anchors to prevent sagging.
-
For a modern look, paint the shelf the same color as your wall so it blends in.
-
For a rustic farmhouse vibe, go with reclaimed wood and a darker stain.
