Fixing a Leaking Tap with Teflon Tape – Simple DIY That Works

Recently, I helped fix a leaking tap in our kitchen, and it turned out to be easier than I expected. The leak was coming from the base where the tap connects to the pipe, and it would drip constantly — wasting water and raising our bill. After doing a bit of research and asking a plumber friend, I found that the issue was most likely due to a loose or worn-out thread seal.

The fix was simple: I turned off the water supply, unscrewed the tap from the pipe, and wrapped Teflon tape (also called plumber’s tape) around the threaded section about 5–6 times. Then, I screwed the tap back in tightly. Once the water was turned back on, the leak had completely stopped.

Teflon tape is affordable, easy to use, and a must-have in any DIY toolkit. This small fix saved us from calling a plumber and spending extra money. It also gave me confidence to try other small plumbing tasks in the future.

If your tap is leaking from the joint, don’t panic — try this method first. It’s simple, clean, and surprisingly effective.

Got a leaky faucet where the parts join up, like at the bottom or spout? Don’t call a plumber just yet. You can probably sort it out yourself with Teflon tape – that thin, white tape that seals pipe threads and stops leaks.

First, shut off the water. Next, undo the leaky bit, give the threads a few tidy wraps with the tape, and screw it back on tight. This should seal things up and stop those little drips.

It’s cheap, simple, and often does the trick for simple faucet leaks. Just be sure you’re only taping the threaded parts, not any washers or cartridges.
