From Cramped to Connected; A guide on Opening Up Your Bungalow

You know the drill if you own one of these gorgeous Chicago brick bungalows in Logan Square. Beautiful character, solid bones, and a kitchen that makes you feel like you’re cooking in a hallway. The wall between your kitchen and that formal dining room? It’s not just a wall. It’s a barrier to conversation, to light, to modern life.

We just finished a job on Altgeld Street. The homeowners were tripping over each other. Before, it was two boxes boxes. After? One luminous, functional space where the family actually lives. But here’s the real talk: in a 1920s bungalow, that wall is almost always load-bearing. Surprisingly, We found the plumbing for the upstairs bath buried in it, too. That’s Logan Square for you, every project is an archaeological dig :face_holding_back_tears:.

We installed a proper steel beam, ran new support posts inside refurbished original columns, and matched the oak flooring.

The permit process with the city was gruelling but the result was Priceless which made me happy.

You don’t just open the space; you open up how you live in it. Trust me, I’ve been doing this here for twenty years. You want it done right, you do it once.
