Need a spot to keep your tools, mower, or other outdoor stuff? No need to call someone or spend a ton of cash. Here’s how you can make your own basic garden shed, even if you’re not a pro builder.
What You’ll Need
Tools:
- Hammer or drill
- Tape measure
- Saw (either a circular one or a hand saw works)
- Level
- Screwdriver
Stuff:
- Plywood sheets
- 2x4 wood for making the frame
- Screws or nails
- Roof panels (metal or shingles)
- Hinges and a handle for the door
- Paint or weatherproof stuff
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Figure Out Your Shed Size
- Think about what you plan to store in it.
- A normal small size is about 6x8 feet.
- Draw a quick plan on paper. Keep it easy!
2. Make a Good Base
- Use concrete blocks or wood that’s made to handle the weather as a base.
- Make sure it’s level so it doesn’t wobble or get damaged later.
3. Make the Floor Frame
- Use 2x4s to make a rectangle for the base.
- Add extra 2x4s (called joists) about 16 inches apart.
- Cover it with plywood and screw it down tight.
4. Make the Walls
- Make each wall frame on the ground using 2x4s.
- Add a spot for a window or door on the front wall.
- Lift the walls and attach them to the floor.
Tip: Get a pal to help you lift and hold the walls while you attach them.
5. Add the Roof
- Use more 2x4s to make roof trusses (they look like triangles).
- Put plywood sheets on top.
- Cover it with roof shingles, metal sheets, or plastic.
Make sure the roof slopes so water runs off!
6. Put in the Door
- Make a simple door with plywood and 2x4s.
- Attach it with hinges, and add a handle or lock.
7. Seal and Paint
- Use wood filler to close any gaps.
- Paint or seal the shed to keep it safe from rain and sun.
Some More Ideas
- Add shelves inside to hold more stuff.
- Use old materials to spend less money.
- Add vents to let air in.
Nice Job!
Making your own shed takes some work, but you can totally do it. Plus, you’ll save some dough and feel great every time you see it.
