How to Place Lights During Renovation

Lighting placement is just as important as the fixtures themselves. Done right, it can make a room feel bigger, warmer, and more functional.

  1. Layer the Lighting
    • Ambient: Ceiling fixtures or recessed lights for overall brightness.
    • Task: Focused lights over kitchen counters, desks, or reading nooks.
    • Accent: Spotlights or wall sconces to highlight art, shelves, or architectural details.

  2. Think About Room Function
    • Kitchen → Bright task lights under cabinets & pendants over the island.
    • Living room → Soft, dimmable ambient light with a few lamps for cozy corners.
    • Bedroom → Warm bedside lamps and dimmable ceiling lights for flexibility.
    • Bathroom → Even lighting around mirrors, plus overhead fixtures for balance.

  3. Use Natural Light First
Position artificial lights to complement windows and daylight flow, not fight against it.

  4. Mind the Height & Spacing
    • Pendants: Hang about 30–36 inches above tables/counters.
    • Recessed lights: Space 4–6 feet apart for even coverage.
    • Wall sconces: Place at eye level (around 60–66 inches from the floor).

  5. Add Smart Controls
Dimmers and smart switches give flexibility for mood and energy savings.
