Material Shortage Lies: When It’s Not Available’ Just Means ‘It’s More Expensive Elsewhere

Sometimes your contractor tells you, “That material no dey market again.” What they really mean is their usual seller doesn’t have it or it’s available but pricier than they quoted. Instead of admitting it, they push you toward a cheaper or familiar alternative that suits them, not you.

Don’t accept “not available” immediately. Verify in other shops or online catalogs. Many good brands are still available, just not where someone wants you to buy from. If the alternative is truly necessary, ask for reasons beyond price — durability, compatibility, warranty.

Remember, changing material often changes the whole outcome. Different tile sizes affect layout and labor cost. Different paint finish changes maintenance needs. Different pipe grade changes water pressure and lifespan. Every substitution must be documented.

The goal is not to fight contractors — it’s to ensure changes are based on facts, not convenience.
