Open shelves look beautiful in photos. In real life, they collect oil, dust, and sticky grime unless you clean often. You also have to curate everything on them because mess is instantly visible.
Closed cabinets hide clutter but cost more, need handles, and can make tight kitchens feel boxed in.
Most real renovators end up doing a mix:
closed cabinets for plates, plastics, and food items
open shelves for cups, plants, or daily-use items
A real consideration is how you actually live:
If you fry food often β expect greasy shelf buildup
If you hate cleaning β choose cabinets
If you break plates often β avoid high open shelving
Donβt copy aesthetic kitchens built only for photography. Build for your habits.
