What are you actually seeing on price, availability, and safety in Canada?
Past 60 days (Ontario + AB), here’s what I’m actually seeing:
-
Availability: A2L (R-454B/R-32) units from the big brands are here; typical 1–3 week lead times. R-410A close-outs are same-day if the match is in stock.
-
Price: New A2L platforms are ~10–20% higher than last year’s R-410A. Close-outs can save $1k–$2k installed, but future parts/refrigerant will run pricier.
-
Safety on-site: “Mildly flammable” hasn’t been an issue—follow the book and it’s fine: nitrogen while brazing, A2L-rated recovery, tight leak checks, labeling. No incidents on my crews.
-
Practical gotchas: Expect a new matched coil/air handler and sometimes a new lineset; a few AHJs are fussier on permits/clearances.
My take: If you can wait a couple weeks, go A2L for future-proofing. If the house is roasting and a solid R-410A close-out is sitting on the shelf, grab the discount and get cool now.
Installation still ranges easily 4k - 5k. but thanks
