Skylight integrations: which skylight brands/flashing kits are field-proven with Solar Roof long-term, and who owns leak liability at the skylight-to-tile interface years later?

So, here’s the deal: Tesla hasn’t given the thumbs-up to any skylight brands or flashing kits for their Solar Roof. Putting in a skylight can be a bit of a puzzle. Some folks have seen leaks where the skylight and solar tiles meet up, and it can happen even a few years down the road. Usually, it’s because the pieces weren’t made to fit together perfectly.

Now, if you get a leak, Tesla might not pay for it under their warranty since they didn’t install the skylight themselves. You’d probably have to get the skylight company or the installer to fix it. Skylights can work with the Solar Roof, but you’ll want a super skilled installer, and keep in mind that Tesla probably won’t take responsibility if something goes wrong.

When integrating skylights with solar roofs, consider the following field-proven brands and flashing kits:

-VELUX: Known for their solar-powered skylights with remote-controlled shades and built-in rain sensors. Their flashing kits are designed to shed water without relying on sealants that can break down over time.

-Panoroof: Offers triple-glazed skylights with self-cleaning glass and leak-proof design. Their Toughened+ Triple-Glazed Skylight Flat Roof Lantern Rooflight is a popular choice.

-Solar Innovations: Provides custom-engineered skylights with thermally enhanced designs and curb mount options. Their fixed skylights are designed to eliminate water penetration.

-Solatube: Specializes in tubular skylights with leak-proof flashing options for various roof types and pitches. Their skylights are designed for versatility, durability, and efficiency.

-Natural Light: Manufactures energy-saving tubular skylights with limited lifetime warranties.

Velux skylights are most common with Solar Roofs, and Tesla usually covers leaks at the skylight-to-tile joint if they did the install.
