Date: September 2025

Location: Earlesfield Estate, Grantham, Lincolnshire, UK

Overview:
South Kesteven District Council has completed its largest-ever council housing refurbishment project, investing £6 million to modernize 119 homes on the Earlesfield Estate. The scheme aimed to transform post-World War II properties, originally built as temporary accommodation, into modern, safe, and sustainable housing that meets current standards.

Scope of Work:
The extensive renovations included:

Replacement of 77 heating systems.

Rewiring of 102 homes.

Installation of 95 new kitchens and 87 bathrooms.

Addition of 96 downstairs toilets.

Replacement of 107 front doors and 110 rear doors.

Full window replacements in 120 properties.

Asbestos removal in 109 homes.

Installation of new loft insulation in 117 homes.

Fitting of extractor fans in 106 homes to improve ventilation and reduce dampness.

Project Management:
The refurbishment was carried out by contractor United Living over two and a half years. To minimize disruption, nearly 100 households were temporarily rehoused during the works. The final property was handed back to the council in June 2025.

Strategic Importance:
This project aligns with the South Kesteven District Council’s Corporate Plan 2024–2027, emphasizing the provision of safe, energy-efficient, and sustainable housing that meets both current and future needs of residents.

Conclusion:
The £6 million refurbishment marks a significant investment in council housing, enhancing living conditions for hundreds of residents and modernizing a post-war estate for decades to come.
