Trying to right-size a critical loads subpanel

I’m in the process of installing solar panels and aim to create a critical loads subpanel that receives power from both my solar system and the main electrical panel. The kit I’m using includes Enphase IQ8+ microinverters. I plan to power several essential circuits, ensuring that during outages, I can keep vital appliances like the refrigerator, essential lighting, and my home office running smoothly. Proper load management is crucial, so I need to carefully calculate the demand of each circuit to ensure everything operates efficiently without overloading the system. This project not only enhances my energy independence but also contributes to a more sustainable lifestyle.

When setting up a critical loads subpanel with Enphase IQ8+ microinverters, stick to essentials like the fridge, LED lights, internet, and maybe a couple outlets - avoid heavy loads unless you have a battery. Each IQ8+ puts out about 350W under good sun, so if you’ve got 10 panels, expect around 3,500W max in real time. Without a battery, the system can only power what the panels are producing at that moment. if the load exceeds that, the system will trip. The Enphase System Controller handles the automatic switchover and isolates the critical panel during outages. Label your circuits clearly, keep the wiring clean, and oversize the panel and conduit if you think you’ll add batteries later.

So, you’re putting in solar panels with a backup for when the power goes out – great for keeping your fridge, lights, and home office on! You’ll need to check the power usage of each appliance to avoid overloading the Enphase system. This way, you save energy and are prepared for anything.

As part of a renovation, installing a critical loads subpanel tied to both a main electrical panel and a solar system with Enphase IQ8+ microinverters. This allows essential appliances—like refrigerator, lighting, and home office—to stay powered during outages. By calculating and managing load demands carefully, ensuring reliable backup power without overloading the system. It’s a smart upgrade that improves energy efficiency, resilience, and supports a more sustainable lifestyle.
