Part 1
Slab Doors (Flat Panel)
Slab doors, also known as flat-panel doors, are the epitome of modern minimalism in kitchen design.
They feature a completely flat, smooth surface without any raised panels, bevels, or decorative moldings, which creates a clean, uninterrupted look that’s perfect for contemporary spaces.
This style originated in mid-20th-century modernist movements, inspired by European designs like those from Bauhaus, emphasizing functionality over ornamentation.
Pros include their ease of cleaning due to the lack of crevices where dirt can accumulate, making them ideal for busy households.
They’re often constructed from materials like MDF (medium-density fiberboard) wrapped in laminate, veneer, or thermofoil for durability and affordability, though high-end versions use solid wood or acrylic for a premium feel.
Slab doors pair well with open shelving or integrated appliances to enhance the sleek aesthetic. However, they can show fingerprints and scratches more easily on glossy surfaces, so opting for matte or textured finishes helps mitigate this.
Installation is straightforward, as they attach via standard hinges, but precise alignment is key to maintaining the seamless appearance. In terms of cost, they range from $100–$300 per door, depending on material quality.
