UW–Madison’s Historic Science Hall Set for $160M Renovation

Okay, so Science Hall at the University of Wisconsin Madison, that old building from 1887, is getting a big makeover starting in February 2027. The state’s budget for 2025–2027 is kicking in over $160 million to make it happen. The idea is to keep the building’s old-school charm while making it work for how we use things today.

What’s on the list? They’re adding a cool new hangout spot in the back with places to study and just chill. The roof’s getting totally redone, too. They might even put in some storm windows, and get this, a green roof to help the environment. And they’re making the whole place easier to get around for everyone, students and staff alike.

Basically, this renovation is going to give Science Hall a fresh start. It’s one of the oldest and most well known buildings at UW–Madison. By mixing the old with the new, they’re aiming to create a spot that’s not only safer and more accessible but also a great place to be for students in the future. It will be a better place to study and for everyone to be comfortable. The old style of the building will remain for those who appreciate it. It’s going to last us for a long time. As the school gets more modern, the buildings should, too. This will help with energy costs in the long run, also. The green roof is going to be a nice touch to bring nature to the campus. It will still be standing as a great place for students to learn and explore.
