What I Learned After Fixing the Worst Room in the House

Every home has that one room nobody wants to deal with. Ours was the laundry room. Dim light, peeling paint, a floor that always seemed slightly damp it was the last place I wanted to spend time, which is probably why it stayed neglected for so long.

One weekend, instead of ignoring it again, we dove in. We scrubbed everything, patched cracks, and added a coat of bright paint that made the tiny space feel less like a cave. A cheap shelf went up above the washer for detergent and baskets. A simple rug covered the ugly corner we couldn’t fix yet.

It wasn’t glamorous, and it definitely didn’t look like something from a home magazine. But doing laundry suddenly felt… tolerable. Maybe even organized.

The funny part? Fixing the worst room first changed how I looked at the rest of the house. It made other projects feel possible. If we could bring life back to that sad little space, the rest didn’t seem so intimidating.

Renovation doesn’t always start with the pretty rooms. Sometimes it starts in the places we avoid and that’s where the biggest confidence boost lives.
