I am currently besotted with kitchen paint colour combinations. As I plan my own kitchen renovation project in our period home, I am constantly on the lookout for traditional kitchen decor inspiration that embraces a modern use of colour, but in a way that’s timeless.
I love the use of pigmented colour within a kitchen design scheme, but I am nervous of embracing trend-led tones due to not wanting to repaint it all in a couple of years. I also like the mixing and matching of colours on cabinets, islands, pantries and furniture, but I think it’s so easy to get it wrong. I often see kitchens where the mix of shades jars against each other, rather than complementing.
This classic English kitchen by deVOL located in Camberwell, London, is a masterpiece in timeless, traditional kitchen design (with a modern touch). The L-shape base units are painted in the creamiest of butter yellows and paired with soft white walls to keep this basement kitchen light and airy.
The long, central kitchen island is painted in a rich mulberry shade, adding the required drama and interest against the more muted tones. A wooden work surface on the island brings warmth to the space, while the Carrara marble blends the walls with the units and keeps everything feeling fresh.
There are so many design aspects to this kitchen that I adore: the wide-board panelling that makes a feature of the low basement ceilings; the window painted yellow to highlight the curved detailing; the integrated fridge that allows for an uninterrupted flow of traditional detailing.
A small pantry painted in a brown-based pink allows for another colour to be thrown into the mix of this kitchen palette, without impacting the more muted tones of the walls and cabinetry. A small curtain skirt adds to the traditional design.
Overall, this wonderful kitchen feels calm and serene (without being boring). The mix of colours and materials makes it both interesting and elegant, while it still feels fresh and fun with the pink pantry and plummy island. I’ll definitely be stealing quite a few design ideas from it when it comes to designing my own kitchen at home!
